Mars, Wrigley close $23bn deal
Mars, Wrigley close $23bn deal
Asia, Australia & New Zealand |
07 October 2008
Key facts
Mars Inc has closed a deal to purchase of chewing-gum company Wm. Wrigley Jr Co to become the world's largest lolly maker, Wrigley announced.
Mars, the privately held maker of M&Ms, Snickers and Skittles, paid $US23 billion ($A30 billion) for Wrigley, which became a household name after it started in Chicago in 1891.
The sale ends more than a century of family control at Wrigley's. Mars, founded in 1911, is still run by descendants of founder Frank Mars, who started the company by selling butter cream lollies in Tacoma, Wash.
